What is word starring and why should I use it?
The word starring feature allows you to prioritize which words students will encounter in the game. Starred words are prioritized in climb and basecamp, so your students will encounter them more often.
By starring words, you can use InferCabulary to support your lesson plan. For example, if you are teaching a book, you can star words from that book in InferCabulary and help your students learn the relevant vocabulary.
If you don't star words, the InferCabulary algorithm will automatically select words based on a students grade level and progress.
How do I star words?
Words can be starred just for individual students, or for all the students in the classroom.
On the classroom or student word list, you can use the filters or the search function to find the words you'd like to star. See this article for more detailed steps.
How can I see classroom progress for the words I starred?
On your teacher dashboard, the Starred Words section shows progress for the words that are currently starred.
Below is an explanation of each status:
Top Struggle Words: 15% of the class is struggling with these words. Consider reviewing these words with the class.
Learned: 80% of the class has learned these words.
Mastered: 80% of the class has mastered these words. A word is considered mastered when it has been learned and then reinforced several times. Once a student masters a word, it will be unstarred just for that student.
Do words get automatically unstarred when students learn them?
Words get automatically unstarred for individual students, but not on the classroom word list.
Student word list: When a student reaches Mastered status for a word, the word is automatically unstarred. This ensures that the student will not have to see the same word too many times, and can move on to learning other words.
Classroom word list: On your classroom word list, words will stay starred until you remove the star.
How do I know when to star new words?
Check the Starred Words section on your teacher dashboard. When most of the starred words for the classroom are in Mastered status, it's time to star more words!
